Tabb-Pearson Cemetery is located in rural Southern Titus County on land that has been in the Collier family since Roy Collier bought the property from W.L. Chambliss in 1927.  S. E. Pearson, who previously owned the land, established the cemetery as a family cemetery.  The Tabb family, from whom the cemetery derives its name, was descended from S. E. Pearson.

Since it was a family cemetery, the owners never considered having a deed that set aside the cemetery.  The Collier family has kept the cemetery fenced to protect it from cattle and wildlife.  Over many years trees, vines, and brush heavily overgrew the cemetery.  Ms. Ann (Collier) Whitington and Edgar Collier cleared most of the overgrowth several years ago and periodically clean the cemetery as time and weather permits.  They had been working on the cemetery "off and on" when we photographed it on January 27, 2006.  Edgar said they would have finished raking and burning the leaves and tree limbs removed, except a county-wide burning ban in effect for several months has prevented them from doing so.

The cemetery contains three monuments.  There is evidence of 8 or 9 graves with the other graves marked by native stones.  Ms. Whitington thinks that she remembers hearing as a child that there may be as many as 10-12 graves.  She has decorated each marked grave with artificial flowers.

DRIVING DIRECTIONS FROM THE TITUS COUNTY COURTHOUSE:

Travel 0.3 miles South on Madison Street to Ferguson Road  (US 271).  Turn left (East) on Ferguson Road and continue 0.1 mile to the intersection of Jefferson Street (US 271). Turn right (South) onto Jefferson Street and proceed 2.2 miles to the intersection with County Road 2040.  County Road 2040 intersects Highway 271 on the right just before Highland Park Baptist Church and Bates-Cooper Funeral Home.

Turn right onto CR 2040 and travel 0.2 miles to the intersection of CR 2042 from the right.  Turn right onto CR 2042.  After about 0.1 mile the pavement ends and the road splits three ways.  Take the center path between (at this writing) a brown brick house and a white frame house and follow the lane into the pasture for about 0.1 mile.  The lane forks at that point.  Take the right fork for approximately 0.3 mile. The cemetery is on the right side of the lane in a clump of trees.
Tabb-Pearson Cemetery sits in a grove of trees in a pasture on the Collier farm south of Mt. Pleasant.  This view is from the approximate southeast looking northwest as you approach the cemetery.
