Shiloh Cemetery is an abandoned cemetery located in rural northwest Titus County on the banks of Ripley Creek.  The Shiloh community was an early settlement founded before the Civil War, and historical records tell us there was once a church and post office nearby.

The cemetery is on heavily wooded private property.  All of the remaining monuments are down and rapidly deteriorating; obscured by briars, underbrush, and fallen trees.  Traylor Russell stated in his History of Titus County that only 10 of the cemetery's original 25 monuments remain.  In addition to monuments found, there were 3 native rocks and a broken brick marking other potential grave sites.  Some ground depressions appear as evidence of other graves.

DRIVING DIRECTIONS FROM THE TITUS COUNTY COURTHOUSE:

Travel 0.3 mile West on West First Street to the intersection of Edwards Avenue.  Turn right (North) on Edwards Avenue and proceed for 1.6 miles across US 67 and under Interstate 30 to a fork in the Road. Take the right fork (Old Paris Road) and continue 1.8 miles to the intersection of US 271. Proceed through the intersection and continue on County Road (CR) 1200 for 6.0 miles to the intersection with CR 1250. The road will fork after 0.7 mile at the intersection of CR 1255. Take the left fork (continuing on CR 1250) for 0.4 mile. The cemetery lies surrounded by dense woods about 400 yards to the right (North) of CR 1250.  Property fence lines lie immediately east and north of the cemetery.

WARNING!

When we shot these photos in February after several very cold spells, we still encountered posionous copperhead snakes in the cemetery.  Be very careful when visiting the cemetery, especially during warmer weather.

"It's a nice place to visit, but I wouldn't want to stay there!"
