The Russell Cemetery, located on land owned by Mr. Ira Bicknell in the William Welch survey in rural Southeast Titus County, is one of several abandoned cemeteries.  Mr. Bicknell proved to be a valuable source of historical information, a true asset for the county that should be exploited. George Fletcher Russell, a relative of Mrs. Bicknell, started the cemetery before the Civil War.  Evidence of graves covering a considerable area indicates that it is a large cemetery.  Although the cemetery lies in woods on the Bicknell property, there is little underbrush and it is easily accessible. There are only two monuments for two brothers named Short, who Mr. Bicknell said came home from the Civil War and eventually killed each other over the affections of a local lady. Mr. Bicknell also related the story of two other monuments that a man removed and transported to the nearby Springhill Southeast Cemetery, but never placed.  They finally disappeared and no one knows what happened to them. The broken monument for Mary E. Pitt described in the Springhill Southeast Cemetery description is thought to be one of them.

RETURN TO TITUS CEMETERIES PAGE
A long drive leads to the Bicknell residence.  To reach the Russell Cemetery, turn left on a dirt road with a gap gate just before the cattle guard at the residence.
Drive to the dead-end of the ranch road approximately 1/2 mile behind the house and barn.
Not visible from the road, the cemetery sits in a grove of trees near a ravine.
The two markers are not fenced and sit near the base of trees near the ravine's edge.
