Masonic Cemetery is located in Northwestern Mount Pleasant, bordered on the South by West Twelfth Street and on the North and West by West Fifteenth Street.  Branch Street runs through the length of the cemetery.

Masonic Cemetery has served local burial needs since 1888.  It was started when Thompson Morris and his wife gave five acres to the Masonic Lodge to be used for cemetery purposes.  The original deed states "The citizens of Mt. Pleasant concluded in a mass meeting that the Old Mt. Pleasant Cemetery is in such condition that the dead buried there is in such irregular manner that it is impossible to put the Cemetery in such condition as becomes Christian people ? have selected a tract of land for a new Cemetery to be used for the burial of White People ONLY to be known as the Masonic Cemetery."

Records show that remains interred in Christian Cemetery were re-interred in Masonic Cemetery.  Christian Cemetery, once located at the corner of East First and South Lide Street, was closed and no trace of it now exists.

Burials are still conducted in Masonic Cemetery, although all lots have been sold and there are currently no expansion plans.

Masonic Cemetery contains a very wide variety of markers and monuments.  Graves markers range from simple native stone and petrified wood markers to very old marble monuments to elaborate statuary to common commercially produced current monuments.
