Long Cemetery is located in eastern Titus County at the intersection of the abandoned Cotton Belt Railroad, Interstate Highway 30, and Texas FM-899. It is a short distance west of Farmers Academy Baptist Church (south of Interstate 30) on a hill abutting Interstate 30.
Long Cemetery was named for John T. Long, who owned the property, and Nannie Long, the first person believed buried there. Long and other families are buried there.
Long Cemetery is an old cemetery and was once abandoned. However, the cemetery has been cleaned, is well maintained, and recent burials have taken place. It has a beautiful and unusual feature in that someone has carved the face of a decorative sun into a live tree on the cemetery's southwest corner. The carving was varnished to protect the carving and the tree, which gave the carving a beautiful yellow cast. The cemetery is hard to see from the Interstate or FM-899, but is easily accessible.
DRIVING DIRECTIONS FROM THE TITUS COUNTY COURTHOUSE:
Drive 0.5 miles west on West First Street to the intersection of Ferguson Road (U.S. 271). Veer to the right and enter Ferguson Road, continue west 0.3 miles to the intersection of Texas FM 899. Turn left onto FM 899 and proceed 2.8 miles to the Railroad crossing. Turn right at the west edge of the tracks immediately after crossing the railroad. The cemetery is 50 yards on the right on the crest of a knoll abutting Interstate 30. A large pipe gate can be closed to protect the cemetery from unauthorized entry, but we usually find it open. The dirt roadway holds considerable water, so in wet weather you may want to park in the mouth of a closed road on the left side of FM-899 just past the railroad.
A unique carved tree adds character to Long Cemetery's peaceful setting.
The Long Cemetery entrance, immediately after crossing the railroad on FM-899, is hard to navigate in wet weather.
Long Cemetery sits atop a peaceful knoll in view of, but unreachable from, Interstate Highway 30
