Justiss Cemetery is a medium sized public cemetery located in rural southeastern Titus County. William Justiss established the cemetery around 1850, probably at the death of his daughter, Mary J. Cobb (Mrs. A. Cobb) on 9-6-1854.
The cemetery is still in use, with burials being conducted infrequently. The 4 acre cemetery is divided into a white section surrounded by a chain link fence on the west side and an unfenced African-American section to the east. The white section is reasonably maintained, but grass and weeds may grow considerably between cuttings. The African-American section is not maintained, and some graves are being lost in the underbrush and trees.
Benjamin Gooch, a Titus County pioneer, is buried in Justiss Cemetery (which is near Gooch's Springs). Gooch came to Red River County from Williamson County around 1835 and served as Clerk of the Red River County Board of Land Commissioners, County Surveyor, and as a member of the First Legislature of Texas. He secured passage of the act creating Titus County from Red River County in 1846. Gooch built the first house at what is now Mt. Pleasant around 1837, and also resided at Gooch's Springs on Swanano Creek and at Daingerfield. Gooch returned to Williamson County in the 1850's and served as County Clerk. After the Civil War, Gooch returned to Titus County, where he died. The Titus County Historical Society erected a monument in the cemetery in his honor.
