The Hickory Hill cemetery sits across a county road from the Hickory Hill Missionary Baptist Church in Southeastern Titus County. It is typical of many Titus County cemeteries in that it originated in a thriving community that ultimately vanished and its history was lost as old time residents passed away. Deed records show that the cemetery property began as property of the Hickory Hill School. No doubt, as the community dwindled and faded, the property was bought by the International Order of Foresters. Ownership then passed to the Woodmen of the World organization and the grounds began to be used for local public burials.
It is fenced with a chain link fence and gated. Cemetery care and maintenance is dependent on donations by families and friends of those interred in the cemetery, and is well provided for. Hickory Hill holds a memorial service or Decoration Day on the second Saturday in May each year. Donations can be made to the Cemetery Committee.
Most older markers like native rocks, wooden crosses, etc. have been removed through the years. A pile of native rocks still remains. Whether they now mark an early grave site is unknown. There are now at least 78 marble slabs with identifying information on them set to indicate grave locations. Additionally, three concrete slabs, four unreadable funeral home markers, a marble slab inscribed “LKK”, and a slate slab inscribed “DFL” mark other graves.
