Goodman Cemetery is located in far northeast Titus County in one of the most rugged terrains of any Titus County cemetery. The Lone Star Cemetery is about three miles south of Goodman.
Goodman Cemetery is located in the middle of a large block of ranch land, about a mile cross-country south of Interstate 30, and about the same distance north of Titus County Road 3140. There is no road access, although an abandoned road runs immediately south of it. The abandoned road may be either a former road to Mount Moriah, or may just be a lane created by hunters and ranchers. The road is not accessible by vehicle, and four wheelers are necessary for access. Regardless, the road is far inside the property boundaries. It does not exit the property and there is no outside access using it.
There was once evidence of many graves, but only 4 marble markers and two natural stone markers remain. The cemetery is not fenced and is heavily overgrown with no maintenance being done for a long time. Without intervention, it will probably be completely lost. The cemetery is located in a grove of trees, but the land north of it was clear-cut, bulldozed, and new growth started. A small branch lies about 50 yards north of cemetery, making access even more difficult. A machete is recommended because briars and thick undergrowth make hacking a trail necessary. No cemetery history was found and no deeds mention the cemetery set aside.
DRIVING DIRECTIONS FROM THE TITUS COUNTY COURTHOUSE:
Directions to the Goodman Cemetery are very difficult to convey. Travel 1.4 miles North on Jefferson Street to the intersection with Burton Road (I-30 service road).
Turn right (East) onto Burton Road. The Interstate 30 entrance ramp is 0.2 mile on the left from the intersection. Enter Interstate 30 and proceed East 8 miles.
Exit at Exit 170 (Texas FM 1993). Turn right (South) at the exit ramp stop sign onto FM 1993.
Proceed 0.1 mile to the intersection of County Road 3140 and turn left (East) onto CR 3140.
After 1.9 miles the road intersects with CR3147. Turn left onto CR3147 and proceed 1.0 mile.
There the road crosses over I-30, but before the bridge an unpaved maintenance road parallels I-30's East bound lanes. Turn right onto this maintenance road and continue to the dead end.
A wire gap allows entry to the land where the cemetery lies. Looking southeast from this vantage point you can see a large cedar tree at the edge of the wooded area about 0.3 mile across the creek bottom. The cemetery lies to the left of the cedar tree. No landmark other than the terrain facilitates locating the cemetery.
