Fort Sherman Cemetery, also known as Miller Cemetery, is located on the F.W. Benson Survey in Southwestern Titus County. It is about 14 miles from Mt. Pleasant in what is now the Bob Sandlin State Park.
The Fort Sherman Cemetery may be Titus County's oldest, since some of the county's earliest settlement was in that area in the early 1830's. Old Fort Sherman, for which it is named, was established nearby in 1839. The Fort Sherman Cemetery is sometimes called the Miller cemetery, probably from the names of those buried there. The cemetery now contains only two Miller family monuments of T. H. Miller and Wife. Members of the Scott, Benson, Miller, and other families are buried in the cemetery.
A chain link fence surrounds the cemetery and the State of Texas maintains the cemetery. It is impossible to determine how many graves may be enclosed by the large perimeter fence, since the elements and development removed many of the indicators. A person raised in the Monticello community said that when he was young that the cemetery covered considerably more ground than the area currently fenced. He remembers seeing many depressions in the ground in the area now covered by the drive and parking lot to the left side of the photo above.
