The Evans Cemetery is located about 4 miles east of Mt. Pleasant on the V. Evans Estate, now part of the Dr. Troyce Williams Ranch.  This is an old cemetery with stones showing burial back in the 1850's.  It is believed to have once contained around 59 graves.  No cemetery history was located, which is unfortunate because of its age.

The cemetery is in a very peaceful surrounding with access only obtained by crossing private land.  It sits in a clearing among a group of trees.  The cemetery is surrounded by a looped wire fence which surrounds the grounds, but the fence is in bad need of repair.  The gates no longer close properly and the fence is very low in one spot, allowing cattle to enter the cemetery.  Cattle have toppled and broken several monuments, which is a shame due to the monuments' age.

Some of the monuments are unusually good condition in spite of being old and located in a damp area surrounded by trees.

DRIVING DIRECTIONS FROM THE TITUS COUNTY COURTHOUSE:

Travel 0.9 miles North on North Jefferson Street (Business U.S. 271) to its intersection with US 67 (16th Street). Turn right (east) on US 67 and proceed 2.7 miles. The private drive to the cemetery lies on the right of US67. Turn right and proceed for 0.3 mile.  Turn right on the road east of the residence that goes beside the residence.  Continue past the private residence into the pasture east of and behind the residence.  The cemetery will lie on the right.

Evans Cemetery sits in the woods in a private pasture.  The gates no longer close and latch properly, so are tied together.
Cattle have gotten into the cemetery and toppled and broken a number of monuments.

The cemetery is fairly clean, but is need of restoration.
A section of the fence is very low and needs replacing.  Rope has been tied back and forth between posts in an attempt to keep cattle out of the cemetery.
The entrance gates are bent and the bottom of one is missing, making them unable to be closed and latched.
They are tied together with rope.
Evans Cemetery contains a number of old and ornamental monuments.
Our thanks to Commissioner Hockaday and his crew for helping preserve one of Titus County's historic cemeteries!

Evans Cemetery has established a bank account at American National Bank in Mt. Pleasant to accept funds to be used in preserving their cemetery.  Please contact us if you are interested in providing labor or funds to preserve Evans Cemetery and we will tell you how to contact the people involved.

2008 Update

Most monuments have been righted, and plans are being made to clean the cemetery.
February 28, 2007
Titus County Commissioner Thomas Hockaday and his crew repaired the fences to keep livestock from doing further damage.
Commissioner Hockaday's crew also ran two strands of barbed-wire down the back side of the cemetery and added some T-posts to reinforce that fence to keep livestock from getting back into the cemetery.
